Farming earthworms can be an entertaining hobby. Worm byproducts can be used for a number of different things. You can choose to raise worms on a large scale in order to sell them or on a low scale just for your own purposes. One of the most popular reasons for raising earthworms is the fact that they are live, and affordable, fish food. The benefits are proven and you can even have fun in the whole process.
Do you have an aquarium full of fish? If so, its no surprise to you how costly fish food can be. In order for fish to remain healthy, they require protein in their food. A good amount of protein in their diet can keep your aquarium healthy and happy for quite a while. This is precisely why white worms are a great option when you are looking to begin farming worms.
White worms are quite high in protein and are cheaper to cultivate in your home than some other types. They can mature to as large as 1 inch and are composed of approximately 80 percent protein. This huge protein within them is great for stimulating your fish farm. The large percentage of protein will also allow for your smaller fish to grow faster and be healthier on the whole. As for the cost, you can start raising white worms for about 5 or 10 dollars. This is much cheaper than most other options available when you are thinking of raising worms.
So now you are wondering how to raise earthworms. You can start with something as simple as a plastic container with a tight fitting lid. Poke a few holes in the container with a sharp instrument so that air can pass through easily. Next, fill the container half way to the top with peat moss and some soil. Place on top a piece of milk soaked bread. This piece of bread is the integral part if you want to be successful in raising worms.
The bread itself will mold and when it does remove the moldy parts with a spoon or knife. Put your previously purchased worm culture into the container. After 4 days, your worm culture will be fully established as it has grown substantially. Make sure you wait 4 days before removing any worms so that they have the chance to reproduce enough to become self sustained.
In just a few short days and a few simple steps you have gone about farming worms.
