Growing grape vines and making wine dates back to 3000 BC and could even have begun much much earlier. All of the major civilizations around the world independently developed the process to convert grape juice into wine. Obviously man needed a little alcohol to smooth out the day. Growing grapes and making wine is a terrific hobby that many actually turn into a business. I have visited many wineries, and most of the owners are in their second careers.
First, purchase grape vines, you will have the option to choose from two different grape varieties depending on the climate you live in. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are best known European grape varieties, but many hybrids have been developed in recent years to allow vineyards to prosper in most areas.
Grape growing states in California, Oregon, and Washington most likely use the European varieties. In climates with a shorter growing season, hybrid grape kind of varieties is advise. Hardiness during winter as well as resistance to disease has been bred into the hybrid grapes. Consider the type of wines you enjoy, since you will be the main consumer at least in the beginning.

The most important consideration in how to grow grapevines is proper growing site, access to full sunlight and nutrient-poor soil. Poorly fertilize soil that is dry will stress out the vine which in turn causes it to produce small grapes. Winemakers rely on small grapes because the skin of the grapes contains all of the colors and flavosr which is the basic ingedients for wine.
