Stress is a daily part of our everyday lives. It does not matter what your location, status, occupation or age is; you will encounter stress in one way or another, some people can work well with stress and some can’t. Stress is anything that we consider as a threat, whether real or percieved.Experiencing stress from time to time can actually be considered helpful because it can trigger our body’s fight-or-flight response, releasing vast amounts of adrenalin to give us a boost of energy, increasing our stamina, alertness and focus to solve the problem at hand.On the other hand, when stress starts to mount and the pressure becomes too great, our ability to cope with the situation in a positive way gets compromised leading to physical and mental breakdown.
In order to avoid the harmful effects of stress from destroying our personal and professional life we must find positive and productive ways to deal with it and address the person or situation that is causing the stress. To do this, we must be able to develop an effective stress management system on our own. There are a few guidelines that you can follow in order to set this up in the shortest time possible.
First would be identifying your stressors: For some this can be easy and for others this can be a stressful task as well, try to jot down your stressors to make it easier. It can take quite awhile but be sure not to leave everything out, this way you will be able to see where your pressure comes from, which ones really need to be addressed immediately, and which ones can just be dropped. This will allow you to deal with your problems one at a time and in a more targeted manner.
After identifying the sources of your stress, you will then have to choose between three possible options. You can either avoid the stressor, address it, or both. Some of the pressures that you feel either at home or at work can actually be solved just by avoiding the source, while some will require you to avoid or time yourself out of the situation so that you can relax and formulate a plan for dealing with the problem.
If you are unable to determine the origins of your stress seek outside help. Try discussing what you’re experiencing with friends or family, if you are still unable to determine the sources after taking this route then make an appointment with your doctor as there maybe an underlying cause as to why you are feeling stressed and is unable to determine the source.
These are just the basics that you should know if you want to develop an effective management plan that will help you deal and minimize the levels of stress that you feel. There is a lot of information that you can find on books or in the internet that may help you out. What’s important is that you recognize the problem and find ways to solve it before it goes out of hand causing irreparable damage to your personal and professional life.
